AS/NZS 3760:2010 is an Australian and New Zealand Standard that provides guidelines for the safety inspection and testing of electrical equipment. It outlines the procedures to ensure that electrical devices used in the workplace or similar environments remain safe and compliant with safety regulations.
The standard ensures that electrical equipment is maintained in a safe condition through regular inspections, testing, and tagging. It aims to minimise electrical hazards, such as shocks or fires, caused by faulty equipment.
Applies to: Portable electrical appliances, devices, and equipment used in the workplace, including power tools, extension cords, and office equipment.
Excludes: Equipment permanently connected to wiring or classified as stationary unless specified otherwise.
The standard specifies:
Visual inspections: Checking for physical damage,
frayed cords, and missing components.
Electrical testing: Testing for insulation resistance, earth continuity, and polarity to ensure electrical integrity.
Record Keeping: Documenting inspections and tests, and attaching tags to show that equipment has been checked.
Tagging: Equipment that passes testing is tagged with the test date, due date for the next test, and the tester’s name.
Testing intervals depend on the environment in which the equipment is used:
• High-risk environments (e.g., construction sites): Every 3 months.
• Factories or warehouses: Every 6 months.
• Office or low-risk environments: Every 12 months or 5 years, depending on the equipment.
The standard allows for a “competent person” to carry out testing and inspections. A competent person is someone who has the necessary skills and knowledge to test and inspect electrical devices safely, usually through training.
